The 5 Self-Care Tips to Help You Get Through Lockdown

During this difficult period we're all facing, it's easy to see why for a lot of us it can leave us feeling low and deflated. For the first week or so of 'Lockdown' I really struggled. The feeling of uncertainty can be very overwhelming, which is why we need to try our best to look after ourselves both mentally and physically. Here are some ways I'm managing my way through Lockdown:

1. Create a New Routine
One of the things I found most difficult at the beginning was the complete switch in my usual routine. Without out normal day to day activities, it's easy to get stuck in the rut of not making plans and essentially living every day the exact same as before. This can leave you feeling unhappy and unfulfilled. Try creating your new 'normal' routine. Set yourself a new alarm, and get up and ready every morning before a set time. Make a list of things you want to accomplish for the week, and for each day you can set your mind to something from that list.

2. Pamper Yourself
Sometimes we just need that little bit of extra TLC in order to feel better. It can often be the simplest things like running a bubble bath, or having an early night that give us that little boost. So scrap everything else and spend time with yourself. Whether that's reading a book in the bath, doing a facemask, or listening to music with a nice glass of wine. Do what you enjoy. Going to bed at a sensible time to ensure you're well rested. Putting on some fresh sheets and making your bedroom extra cosy can help a lot. You could even invest in some new luxurious bedding if you're really looking to relax. I've been eyeing up a crushed velvet divan set

3. Exercise Regularly
One thing I've noticed that has really improved my mental health is exercising more regularly. I was never someone who spent hours in the gym, so please don't think you have to go hard with your exercise. Spend an hour or so every day going on a long walk somewhere. This can help to clear your mind, as well as benefit your body physically. Or you can of course do some at home workouts if you prefer.  Again, it can be easy during this time to feel trapped at home so using this time to feel in control of your mind and body can be very helpful.

4. Learn a New Skill
Think about all the things you've always wanted to do but have never had the time. Well, not is the perfect opportunity to start something new! I know for myself I often make a lot of excuses, or feel guilty for doing something I enjoy because I 'should be doing this or that'. But right now we can explore these things without feeling guilty. Whether you want to start baking, painting or knitting - the choice is yours! You can even earn a new qualification as there are some many free online courses available. I'm currently getting back into learning German!

5. Keep in Touch
And finally I think it's very important to stay connected. For a lot of us, this can be a very lonely period being separated from our friends, family and partners. Make that little bit of extra effort to check in with people, even if it's just dropping someone a text. Or you could always video call your friends and family. I know for a lot us we've really been enjoying chatting and playing online games and quizzes with our loved ones.

How are you coping with the current situation? What are your tips?
